When are the portfolio values in the app updated?
Why isn't the value of my portfolio updated in real time?
The value of your portfolio is updated once a day, with a delay of two business days. You can see these values in the graph on the ‘Portfolio’ tab.
Why is there a delay?
Your portfolio uses index funds, not ETFs. ETFs trade continuously throughout the day. Index funds only process purchases and sales once a day, and their value (called the net asset value) is set once a day.
Why do we use index funds instead of ETFs?
Your portfolio uses index funds, not ETFs, because they are better suited for long-term investing. Index funds are also exempt from stock exchange tax (TOB).
Why is this advantageous for long-term investors?
Index funds naturally discourage frequent trading and market timing, which can hurt your long-term returns. By processing trades once a day, they help you stick to your investment plan rather than reacting to short-term market movements.
Since you are investing for the long term (in terms of decades, not days), daily price fluctuations matter much less than consistent, patient investing over time.
When do updates take place?
We update our systems every evening and overnight, as soon as we receive the latest fund values.
Here's how it works:
Let's say it's Thursday, 8 February 2024. The most recent value we have is from Tuesday, 6 February. Your portfolio chart will show:
5 February: actual value as of 5 February
6 February: actual value on 6 February
7 February: displays the value from Tuesday (6 February)
8 February: displays the value from Tuesday (6 February)
Important note: Fund values are only updated when the stock markets are open. This means that no new values are created on weekends and public holidays.
