When you first sign up, you'll fill in a questionnaire to use the service. Your appetite for risk will be determined, as well as your financial goals and time horizon for your investments. Through the Curvo app, you can invest in a diversified portfolio managed by NNEK, a Dutch investment firm licensed by the Dutch regulator (AFM). The underlying investment philosophy is different than that of traditional banks. We believe in passive investing through index funds. But banks have historically offered only actively managed funds. These are very expensive to run so they charge high fees for them. It's great that you're already saving for your pension. We think the Belgian pension saving plan is a good system thanks to the tax break. However we see a couple of limitations: Your contributions are capped at €1,310 per year. Pension saving funds are constrained in how they invest your money. This puts a limit on the return of your investments. When you first start, you are asked a series of questions to better understand you and your goals. This is all done through the Curvo app and roughly takes six minutes. Once you have completed those first steps, verification needs to happen on NNEK's end, who manages the investments. This usually doesn't take longer than a day. Every investment carries risk. Even though the global economy has been growing consistently over the last 100 years, there have been periods of downturns where returns were negative (think about the corona crisis!). To iron out temporary fluctuations in the markets and end up with a positive return, it's important to invest for the long term.
