Unfortunately you do. Once your account is opened, you have to declare it to National Bank.

Declare your account

There are two ways to declare your foreign account to the Belgian National Bank:

Online
Through a paper form

The easiest way is to do it online and this is the one we'll focus on.

Declare your accounts by filling in the form available on the website of the National Bank of Belgium. If you go for the electronic route, remember that you'll either need your identity card (with chip!), your PIN code and a card reader or else access to your itsme account.

We'll use the French speaking form as an example.

Add the account to "Vak XIII" under "A. Rekeningen in het buitenland":

Check the box 1075
Fill in your name
Indicate "NEDERLAND" as the country
Check the box "Zijn de wettelijk bepaalde gegevens over de rekening bij het Centraal Aanspreekpunt bij de Nationale Bank van België gemeld?".

How do I declare the Reynders tax in the 2024 tax form?

Add the amount to declare to code 1444 in Box VII. We let you know the amount in the Curvo app and by email. The tax authorities will calculate the 30% Reynders tax based on what you declare.

How do I declare my account to the Belgian tax authorities?

Your investment account is with NNEK in the Netherlands. This means you have to tell the Belgian tax authorities about your Dutch investment account. For that, you need to do two things.

1. Declare your account to the Belgian National Bank (once)

The instructions are in the Curvo app in your "Account" section, and are also available here. You need to do this once upon opening your account.

2. Mention the account on your tax form (every year)

How is my money invested?

Accepted Answer

When you send money to be invested, the following steps happen:

You make the deposit
Your deposit is received
The orders are sent to the fund providers
The investments are completed

Receiving your deposit

We count up to 3 business days (although it usually happens faster) between you making the deposit and the money being received at the Rabobank deposit account (managed by NNEK). The money stays on that account until it is sent to the fund providers to be invested.

Sending orders to the fund providers

Sometimes orders are passed on the same day, but sometimes it is only the working day after, depending on the timing that the deposit comes in. Here, NNEK (who manages your investments) will create the orders orders that fit the portfolio you are investing in. The orders are then sent to the different fund providers, namely Vanguard, iShares (BlackRock) and Amundi. This happens once a day and only when the financial markets are open (Monday to Friday).

Completion of the investments

It can take up to 4 working days for the investments to be confirmed. Purchases are not instantaneous as you are not purchasing ETFs through an exchange but rather institutional funds where the orders are run once a day. The investments offered by NNEK and made accessible through the Curvo app are for long-term investing and not suited for timing the market.

How do monthly contributions work?

Through the Curvo app, you can easily set up monthly contributions through SEPA Direct Debit. The money is debited the first business day of the month. You can edit or pause the contributions as you wish through the app.

How long does it take for the money to be invested?

It can take up to 8 business days as there are two factors at play:

1) SEPA Direct Debit

Under SEPA Direct Debit, funds are debited even if the customer does not have sufficient funds on his bank account. For example, if you set up a direct debit of €300 but you only have €200 on your bank account, the full amount of €300 would still be debited and transferred to the account. What happens though is that your bank will come to us a few days later and automatically take the money back.

This is a risk if for instance the funds have been invested by then. That's why we provide a window of 4 business days as a safety net before we invest the money.

2) Executing the investment orders

The funds in the Curvo portfolios are index funds, not ETFs. This means the funds are purchased directly from the fund providers (Vanguard, BlackRock, and Amundi) rather than on an exchange.

For index funds, the execution takes a few days because of the settlement period. This is the time it takes to confirm a trade. On a stock exchange, there's a clearinghouse that facilitates trades between buyers and sellers.
